01. Juniors

In 2011, New Zealand Football launched the award winning Whole of Football Plan, a plan which aligned strategy, workforce and focus across football development in New Zealand.

McDonald’s Junior Football aims to provide all children aged 5-12 years with high quality Football experiences that increase passion for the game, fundamental movement and playing skills. All whilst having fun!

Through McDonald’s Junior Football, players will experience age appropriate games and coaching in a programme that is specifically tailored to meet their wants and needs. They will learn new skills in a fun and friendly environment, taking part in weekly sessions that promote General Movement (Fit4football 11+ kids), Football Coordination, Football Technique and Small Sided Games.

Providing standardised playing formats, clear outcomes and training recommendations for each stage of a player’s development, the importance of the McDonald’s Junior Football cannot be underestimated.  It will ensure the experience provided at the grassroots leaves Kiwi kids enthused, technically competent and in love with sport.

These Junior programmes are offered:

  • McDonald’s First Kicks (5-6 Years) Grade 5 & 6
  • McDonald’s Fun Football (7-8 Years) Grade 7 & 8
  • McDonald’s Mini Football (9-10 Years) Grade 9 & 10
  • McDonald’s Mini Football (11-12 Years) Grade 11 & 12

Grading is strictly based on the year of birth: (2019 Season)
2014 – 5th Grade  |  2013 – 6th Grade  |  2012 – 7th Grade  |  2011 – 8th Grade  |  2010 – 9th Grade  |  2009 – 10th Grade  |  2008 – 11th Grade  | 2007 – 12th Grade

Organisation of Teams

All registrations are sent to the relevant Grade Coordinator and, where possible, they will select teams based upon requests – friends, schools, previous teams (early requests are easier to meet). Teams are usually announced during mid to late March and will be emailed out by the Grade Coordinator.  From 5th to 8th grades the teams are mixed and from 9th grade upwards girls have the option to play in a girls only team against other girls.

Development Teams

7th Grade: During May, 7th Grade players will be invited to attend trials to be part of a 7th Grade Mixed Development squad. This is in addition to their current team who play on Saturday mornings.  The Development Squad will be split into 2 teams that will play on Sunday mornings in the 9th Grade In-House league.  This commitment will also include one weekly team training.

8th Grade: Pre-season all registered 8th Grade players will be invited to attend trials to be part of an 8th Grade Development Team. Development teams will play in the 9th/10th Grade In-House league on Sunday mornings, will have one team training per week and will be invited to a Springs Skills Centre Plus training session once per week (at an extra cost).  Players can choose to play for a development team (if selected) or play in the 8th Grade In-House on Friday evenings - they can't do both. Click here for 2019 trial dates

9th – 12th Grade: Pre-season all registered 9th – 12th Grade players will be invited to attend trials to be part of Mixed or Girls Development teams within their grade. Players selected in a development team will be expected to train twice per week - one team training session and one Springs Skills Centre Plus training session (at an extra cost).  9th and 10th grade players can choose to play for a development team (if selected) or play in the 9th/10th Grade In-House on Sunday mornings - they can't do both.

9th to 12th Grade development teams teams will play in an AFF (Auckland Football Federation) competition on Saturday mornings.  These games are played at Seddon Fields or at other clubs around Auckland (usually as far as Drury to the south and Bucklands Beach to the east).  Some teams may also be asked to attend 1-2 tournaments held on Sundays during the season at other clubs around Auckland.  Click here for 2019 trial dates

These trials are ONLY for players who wish to play football within the highest ranked teams within these grades and for those committed to two trainings per week.  These teams are announced by the Football Development Manager, after trials, and in collaboration with other club coaches.

Coaches and Managers

Each team requires a volunteer coach, assistant coach and a manager (including development teams). Every team will be provided with a kit bag at the start of the season which contains balls, cones and bibs. It is up to the team if they have training or not and there will be the opportunity to request turf space at Seddon Fields for training. The club also has bookings that allows any team to use Walker Park and Cox Bay for trainings during the week if a preferred day/time is not available on the turf.

Coaches are encouraged to complete a Junior Coaching Course which will be held in the Western Springs Clubrooms and at no expense to the coach. These usually require you to attend just one session and will help you with ideas on how to help the kids develop. Team Coaches should encourage positive behaviours, and all players to perform different skills and roles within the team.

PREMIER COACHES

Western Springs AFC is committed to continuing to improve the level of coaching at the Club. Where the Club is able to provide a suitably qualified non-parent coach for any Premier Development team, there will be an additional fee required to cover the expenses of this coach.

Parent coaches should be willing to complete the NZ Football Junior Level 2 course (if not already completed) – funded by the club.

WSAFC Kit

All players should wear 'Springs' shirt, shorts and socks. These can be purchased online or instore at Soccer Scene in Point Chevalier. It is recommended that shin pads are worn, and Turf Boots are compulsory on the Turf.

All coaches and managers are required to wear turf boots on the turf.
