The LOTTO NRFL Women’s Premier Division kicks off tomorrow night as we host Northern Rovers at Seddon Park. Kick off 7.30pm
Our Head of Women's Football, Ryan Faithfull, fresh from a successful 3rd place finish at the U17 National Tournament, managed to sit still for five minutes and give us his thoughts ahead of an exciting season for the club.
When you joined the club last October, you said Springs had a "solid foundation in Girls and Women’s football, and has a lot of potential for growth"- 5 months in, what's your view now?
It has been an incredibly enjoyable 5 months beginning this new role at Western Springs. We’ve begun to imbed a new playing & coaching methodology, and aligned our Women’s 1st team with the Girls Academy Pathway. We still have a long way to go to achieve our short term objectives, but can see us slowly building momentum.
You've experienced two National Under17 tournaments already. How has this helped you during your first few months?
The Under 17 national tournament has always been a personal highlight of mine. I thoroughly love this tournament, the competition, and memories that come with it. Being involved in two tournaments now has also given me the opportunity to connect and work closely with the Youth coaches and top talents that are developing in our Academy age groups.
We know you have been very busy preparing for the season ahead, tell us about the coaching team you'll have supporting you this year?
I am very fortunate to have assembled a great staff for the 2021 season in the senior women’s environment. The Club welcomes back Kelly Bolus (Team Manager), and Suzy Falconer (Team Physio) for the new year. Both Kelly and Suzy are integral to our Management and Medical staff.
Alec Flood has joined this year as the Head Coach for the Women’s Development team, transitioning from the Boys Academy to the Senior Women’s environment. Additionally, we welcome Caleb Ward who is taking on a role as Technical Analyst - assisting with Training and video analysis and Doug Robinson as Goalkeeper Coach.
How's the squad looking? There are obviously some superstar U17s involved but what has been your main aim and have you achieved it?
I am happy with the squad that we have selected during preseason and looking forward to getting the season underway! We’re an ambitious group full of character and quality. As a coach, I have two main objectives for our five weeks of preseason, establishing a strong togetherness within the playing group and staff and preparing the players to compete to their fullest by the first whistle of the season.
An exciting year ahead with the new National League. It represents a great opportunity for the club but not without its challenges. What's your opinion on the new set up?
To have the opportunity to qualify and participate in the National league this year is great for any club. This is a challenge our team is aiming to achieve.
Come on down tomorrow and be part of what is going to be an exciting 2021 for the club.
