On behalf of our Committee Members and Staff at Western Springs AFC, I'd like wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
2020 certainly had its challenges for everyone, affecting us all individually, and as a club. However despite all the challenges we certainly still had lots to celebrate with many successes throughout the shortened season, and we definitely finished on a high with Western Springs hosting another successful National U17 Tournament last weekend.
For the third year running WSAFC organised and hosted this national club competition and a HUGE congratulations must go out to all involved. Based on the positive feedback from participating clubs and NZ Football we expect this will be a regular event of the NZ Football calendar.
Organising an event of this magnitude requires an enormous effort by club members and in particular event organiser Tracy Cunnington. Despite the need to postpone the event not once but twice due to COVID Tracy eventually settling on a late December date, much to the delight of participating players.
I'd also like to acknowledge and thank the team supporting Tracy - Paul Rutland, Mike Cunnington, Julia Robinson and Matt Upton. And of course the extended team supporting them including - Paul T, JLo, Grant Lester, Spencer, Marieke, Brad Alcorn, Rachael Monk, Patrick Wilson, Scott McKee, Steve Will, Matt Parker, Alec Flood, Rich Adlard, Claire Louise Wilson, Shelly Adlard, Grant Ramsay & Oscar Ramsay, and the many other volunteers. Also a thanks to Rob Phelps for the help with scaffolding.
CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR U17 WOMEN'S TEAM
Under the baking summer sun, our U17 Women's team delivered our best ever club result narrowly missing out on 3rd place with a 1 all draw against Hamilton Wanderers turning to a penalty shootout where they took 4th place falling to Hamilton 6 : 4.
The Men's first team qualified top of their group before eventually losing to Auckland United in the quarter-finals. Congratulations to all participating teams!
To add further drama to what was a fantastic tournament both televised finals went to extra time and an eventual penalty shoot-out with Tauranga United (Men) and Forrest Hill Milford (Women) taking out the National U17 titles.
While we’ve just finished the 2020 tournament we’re only a few months away (COVID willing) from the planned March 2021 event. If you didn’t have an opportunity to watch this year’s tournament I strongly encourage you to book it in for next year as the quality of football and level of competition is well worth a visit.
