CLUB NEWS | 23 March 2021

Western Springs AFC hosted the National U17s Youth Tournament for the third consecutive year last weekend and what an event it was!

Firstly, congratulations to our Women's team who finished third, and were so unlucky to miss out on a place in the Championship Final. Their semifinal match against Auckland United FC was drawn 1:1 sending them to a penalty shoot-out - 30 penalties were taken before the game was decided!!!!

Unfortunately Auckland United came out on top winning 14-13. United then went on to win another penalty shoot-out, and the Championship title, beating Northern Rovers 5-3.

The men's final went to Birkenhead United who went 3 up early in the match against Lower Hutt City and took the title with a 3-0 result.

Our Springs Green team can hold their head up high with a strong start in the group stage which then turned into a real arm wrestle. Three 1-0 losses, including to last year's champions, showed how fine the margins were between the teams. They headed to the bowl quarter-finals and an exciting win against Cashmere Technical FC, setting up a Bowl semi-final place with Auckland City who proved to be too strong on the day.

Springs White put in a great effort and should be very proud. The team was thrown together a week before the tournament filling the gap for a late team withdrawal. They suffered a very unlucky exit in the Plate quarter-final when the boys were very much in control, a harsh red card flipped the game on its head and they eventually lost to Manurewa AFC on penalties.

Secondly, congratulations to Emma Pijnenburg and Adama Coulibaly who were both awarded the tournaments Most Valuable Players. A very proud weekend for Western Springs.

Lastly, but definitely not least, congratulations to the tournament organisers and their team. Organising an event of this magnitude requires an enormous effort by club members, volunteers and in particular event organiser Kelly Bolus who was closely supported by Tracy Cunnington and Julia Robinson.

From Mascots to pitch repairers, there was a massive team working and volunteering over the weekend and everyone played an important part in creating another successful tournament. We'd like to extend a BIG THANK YOU to everyone involved, and to those that came down and supported too.

Thanks also to the tournament sponsors... Youth Football Development Trust  •  Bayleys  •  Platform Sports  •  Trophy Centre  •  Haka Sports Tours  •  Kwik n Ezy  •  LOTTO Sports
