Junior Football

In 2011, New Zealand Football launched the award winning Whole of Football Plan, a plan which aligned strategy, workforce and focus across football development in New Zealand.

McDonald’s Junior Football aims to provide all children aged 5-12 years with high quality Football experiences that increase passion for the game, fundamental movement and playing skills. All whilst having fun!

Through McDonald’s Junior Football, players will experience age appropriate games and coaching in a programme that is specifically tailored to meet their wants and needs. They will learn new skills in a fun and friendly environment, taking part in weekly sessions that promote General Movement (Fit4football 11+ kids), Football Coordination, Football Technique and Small Sided Games.

Providing standardised playing formats, clear outcomes and training recommendations for each stage of a player’s development, the importance of the McDonald’s Junior Football cannot be underestimated.  It will ensure the experience provided at the grassroots leaves Kiwi kids enthused, technically competent and in love with sport.

These Junior programmes are offered:

  • McDonald’s First Kicks (5-6 Years) U5 & U6
  • McDonald’s Fun Football (7-8 Years) U7 & U8
  • McDonald’s Mini Football (9-10 Years) U9 & U10
  • McDonald’s Mini Football (11-12 Years) U11 & U12

Grading is strictly based on the year of birth: (2022 Season)
2017 - 5th Grade  |  2016 – 6th Grade  |  2015 – 7th Grade  |  2014 – 8th Grade  |  2013 – 9th Grade  |  2012 – 10th Grade  |  2011 – 11th Grade  |  2010 – 12th Grade

Organisation of Teams

All registrations are sent to the relevant Grade Coordinator and, where possible, they will select teams based upon requests – friends, schools, previous teams (early requests are easier to meet). Teams are usually announced during late March/early April and will be emailed out by the Grade Coordinator.  From U5 to U8s, the teams are mixed and from U9s upwards, girls have the option to play in a girls only team against other girls.

Development Teams

U8: Pre-season U8 players are able to attend Player ID Sessions (fun small-sided games) to be part of an U8 team that will play the 7v7 game format in our U9+ in-house games on Sunday mornings.  They will have 1x team training per week and will be invited to 1x Springs Skills Centre training per week (at an extra cost).  Players can choose to continue playing with friends in the U8 in-house games on Friday evenings or to attend the Player ID Sessions with a view to playing in the U9+ in-house games - they can't play in both.

U9-U12: Pre-season U9  –  U12 players are able to attend Player ID Sessions to be part of Mixed or Girls Academy teams within their grade. Players selected in a Academy team will be expected to train 2x per week - 1x team training session and 1x Springs Skills Centre training (at an extra cost).

U9 & U10 players (girls and boys) can choose to play for a Mixed Academy team (if selected) or play in the U9+ In-House games on Sunday mornings - they can't do both.

U11 & U12 players (girls and boys) can choose to play for a team (Girls or Mixed) that plays 9v9 in games organised by NRF (Northern Region Football) on Saturday mornings OR play 7v7 in our U9-12 In-House games on Sunday mornings on the turf at Seddon Fields - they can't do both.

All U9-U12 Academy teams will play in a NRF (Northern Region Football) competition on Saturday mornings.  These games are played at Seddon Fields or at other clubs around Auckland (usually at other clubs within 10-15km).  Some teams may also be invited to attend 1-2 tournaments held on Sundays during the season at other clubs around Auckland.

  • These Player ID Sessions are ONLY for players whose preference is to play football with players of similar abilities and motivations for playing i.e. committed to 2x trainings per week.  These teams are announced by the Head of Junior & Youth Football after Player ID Sessions, and in collaboration with other club coaches. We are fully supportive of all players continuing to play in teams based on player preferences, including friendships.  These players do not need to attend Player ID Sessions but can share their preferences on registration forms when registering for the new season online.  Information about Player ID Sessions in 2022 is here.

Coaches and Managers

Each team requires a volunteer coach, assistant coach and a manager (including development teams). Every team will be provided with a kit bag at the start of the season which contains balls, cones and bibs. It is up to the team if they have training or not and there will be the opportunity to request turf space at Seddon Fields for training. The club also has bookings that allows any team to use Walker Park and Cox Bay for trainings during the week if a preferred day/time is not available on the turf.

Coaches are encouraged to complete a Junior Coaching Course which will be held in the Western Springs Clubrooms and at no expense to the coach. These usually require you to attend just one session and will help you with ideas on how to help the kids develop. Team Coaches should encourage positive behaviours, and all players to perform different skills and roles within the team.

PREMIER COACHES

Western Springs AFC is committed to continuing to improve the level of coaching at the Club. Where the Club is able to provide a suitably qualified non-parent coach for any Premier Development team, there will be an additional fee required to cover the expenses of this coach.

Parent coaches should be willing to complete the NZ Football Junior Level 2 course (if not already completed) – funded by the club.

WSAFC Kit

All players should wear 'Springs' shirt, shorts and socks. These can be purchased online or instore at Soccer Scene in Point Chevalier. It is recommended that shin pads are worn, and Turf Boots are compulsory on the Turf.

All coaches and managers are required to wear turf boots on the turf.
