Springs Skill Centre

Springs Skills Centre

Western Springs runs it’s own skills centre providing kids of all ages with opportunities to develop key technical skills and decision making in a series of sessions throughout each term.  The focus is on having fun and learning in a safe environment alongside other players of a similar age.  The Springs Skills Centre runs during the middle 8 weeks of each term and provides opportunities for players to develop their individual skills year round.

Mini Skills (5th to 8th Grades)

The sessions with a focus on having fun and growing the love of the game are aimed at boys and girls from 5th to 8th grade.  They will provide the kids with the opportunity to get lots of touches of the ball and improve their ability to play the ball with different parts of the foot.  Each session will also allow the kids to develop their decision making skills through activities and small sided games (1v1, 2v2, 3v3) and will focus on key skills including:

Springs Skills Centre (9th to 12th Grades)

During the skill acquisition phase (9 to 12 years), junior players are encouraged to take part in weekly trainings in addition to a game.  At Springs we offer training for boys and girls of all abilities and with different motivations for playing football.  The Springs Skills Centre offers a structured programme aligned with New Zealand Football that aims to develop:

  • 4 core attacking skills (striking the ball; receiving the ball; travelling with the ball; and 1v1)
  • 4 core defending skills (marking, pressing, interception and tackling)
  • 2 constants of positioning and communication.

The sessions are led by coaches who are educated up to the NZF Advanced Junior Level 3.  There are two different parts to the Springs Skills Centre:
