It’s an incredibly exciting time for women's football! The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 saw sold out stadiums across New Zealand and Australia and record numbers of people across the globe watching the games. More than 340,000 fans witnessed the world’s best footballers at Eden Park with an average crowd of over 38,000 across the nine Auckland matches.
At Western Springs, we are enormously proud to be one of the largest clubs in New Zealand for female players. We currently have 5 senior teams, in excess of 25 junior and youth girls only teams and over 600 women and girls playing football at Springs! Our female player base makes up 25% of our total player base and Springs has the largest female playing base in Auckland! The number of females playing football at Springs has also doubled over the last 10 years and if recent predictions are true we can expect to see an even more accelerated growth over the next few years!
At Springs, we offer our female players a wide range of playing options with pathways for both social and Academy/Premier players. There are also options for our most talented junior and youth girls to challenge themselves even further by playing in mixed teams.
Our Premier women’s team has seen some great recent success finishing runners up in both the NRFL League and National League in 2022, qualifying again for National League and winning the Kate Shepherd Cup in 2023.
Our Premier Reserves/Development team has also seen some great success winning their league in 2023. This was made even more special by the fact that the squad included a large number of “home-grown” players.
We have first class playing/training facilities and coaches and we firmly believe in equitable access to resources for all players (evidenced by being one of only eight clubs in Auckland who has commited to the NRF Equity Charter).
We are continually striving to make Springs a better and better Club for female players of all levels. Over the last 5+ years we have implemented a range of initiatives designed to better support female players and increase female participation at Springs. We also have a number of initiatives currently in-progress to further support this goal!
If you would like to know more about or contribute to any of our in-progress initiatives then please contact the Lead for that initiative or for further information please contact Julie Dunn.
