Premier Football 2024 Review
Western Springs AFC: Leading the Way in National League Success!
What an incredible season it’s been for Western Springs AFC!
Both our Men’s and Women’s teams have excelled on the National League stage, cementing our reputation as one of New Zealand football’s most successful and inclusive clubs.
Our Premier Men’s team fell just short of a top-two finish, securing 3rd place in their inaugural National League Championship appearance. Despite the near miss, they’ve proven themselves among the best, with a potent attack scoring an impressive, league high 25 goals in just nine matches. Six players from our Premier Men’s squad have come through our junior and youth systems, demonstrating the effectiveness of our player development pathway.
Our Women’s team continued to shine in the National League, finishing in the top four for the third consecutive season. Their determination and resilience were on full display, as they scored 22 goals throughout the campaign. Eight of the squad members came through our junior and youth systems making key contributions. The team’s blend of experience and emerging talent has been pivotal to their continued excellence at the national level.
This highlights the strength of our football program at Springs. Under the leadership of Maia Vink and Scott Hales, Western Springs is entering an exciting new era, with emerging talent thriving in our pre-academy and academy programs. Our football pathway is one of the strongest in the region, thanks to the leadership of Andy Vernon, our Head of Junior and Youth Football, and the expertise of Academy Managers Katie Rood and Danyon Drake. The success of the Fantails program has opened up new pathways for female players, while record numbers at Academy ID sessions highlight our growing reputation as the destination for aspiring footballers.
The future is bright, and we’re proud to offer a footballing environment that fosters development, success, and inclusivity.
A huge thank you to all our players, coaches, and supporters for making this season one to remember.
We can’t wait to see what 2025 has in store!
