WSAFC over 40’s tournament
The over 40’s tournament is a yearly highlight of the “Old Man’s Football” calendar.
- Saturday 4th November, 9am til...last man standing!
It was the Brainchild of WSAFC Old boy and nearly Life member Sean Mackinnon, who saw a gap in the footballing landscape for a late season festival of football followed by a beer or two and some great banter amongst the grey haired warriors.
The initial tournament was held in 2009, and but for the Covid years has been held ever since. It’s a 16 team competition with a Cup and Plate winner and is always over subscribed.
Sean moved his family to Australia about 10 years ago, and continued to organise the tournament seamlessly from a distance. He stepped down from leading the tournament in 2017, and it’s been taken over by Life Members Steve Wildsmith, Jo Crabbe and Keith Maddison who make sure everything flows smoothly.
This year the tournament is on the 4th of November, a little later in the year than in the past but with enough lead time that the Over 40’s players have recovered from their winter exertions, and banked some home credits with their families by getting the lawns up to scratch.
The tournament is a very mellow, relaxed day of football exactly how Sean Mackinnon envisioned it from the start, the surplus from the tournament goes into the player welfare fund.
